Sergeant Heather Glenn was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a subject after a domestic dispute at Perry County Memorial Hospital at 8885 IN-237 in Tell City at 12:50 am. Sergeant Glenn was investigating a domestic incident involving a woman being treated at the hospital for her injuries. When the woman notified authorities that the subject was arriving at the hospital, Sergeant Glenn and officers from Tell City Police Department, Perry County Sheriff’s Office, and Cannelton Police Department responded. The subject resisted arrest, and despite using an electronic control weapon, Sergeant Glenn could not subdue the man. The subject pulled out a gun and fatally shot Sergeant Glenn. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject.

JACQUES F. ROUGEAU, JR. Trooper Jay Rougeau was shot and killed by a wanted man near Swamp Road and Baumgardner Drive in Walker Township shortly after 3:00 pm. At 12:45 pm, the subject had entered the parking lot of the Pennsylvania State Police's Lewistown Barracks and opened up on troopers, wounding a State Police lieutenant. During the subsequent search, Trooper Rougeau located the subject in a wooded area, and the two exchanged gunfire. Trooper Rougeau and the man were both killed in the shootout.

  K9 Aron succumbed to heat exhaustion after the temperature monitoring alarm system failed while the patrol vehicle was idling. K9 Aron was left in a patrol vehicle with the air conditioner running. All Houston Police Department K9 vehicles have an alarm system that activates when the inside temperature rises to unsafe levels. The monitor system notifies the handler, sounds a horn, and can lower the windows. The system malfunctioned when the air conditioner failed. When the handler returned to his vehicle and noticed K9 Aron in distress, he transported him to a veterinarian clinic, where K9 Aron succumbed to heat exhaustion. Police Officer Chris Wagner was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home on Arrowood Lane at about 10:00 pm. A man assaulted two other men in the home and left the residence. After arriving at the scene, Officer Wagner located the subject in the wood line near the house. A struggle ensued, during which Officer Wagner was shot and killed. The subject was arrested by other Wintergreen police officers and deputies from the Nelson County Sheriff's Office. Officer Wagner had served with the Wintergreen Police Department for three years and had previously served as a police officer with the Massanutten Police Department for one year. Chief of Police Tony Rickerson was killed in a vehicle crash on CR 143 and Southwest 28th Lane in Hamilton County at 10:25 pm. He was en route to backup officers responding to an unauthorized block party in Jasper when his vehicle struck a deer in the road. His patrol truck careened off the roadway, struck a large tree, and became engulfed in flames. Chief Rickerson had served with the Jasper Police Department for 13 years and was appointed as the Chief in September 2022. He had previously served with the Jennings Police Department and the Florida Department of Corrections. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Canine  Lenin died after suffering a bite from a venomous snake while conducting training in the 5100 block of East Road in Baytown. His handler rushed him to the Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, where he succumbed to the effects of the venom. Canine Lenin was an Explosives Ordinance Detection canine and was credited with locating numerous firearms and shell casings during evidence searches. He won the TOP Bomb Dog Award, second place for Bomb Scramble, and third place for Bomb Vehicles in Dothan, Alabama, in February 2023. Canine Lenin had served with the Baytown Police Department for only seven months.

K9 Rudy was shot and killed near the 22200 block of River Road in Perris, while tracking a wanted felon at 4:45 pm. Deputies were looking for the man in the area when dispatchers received a call about a couple trespassing on their property. The deputies confirmed the man was the fugitive and requested a canine to conduct a track. K9 Rudy's handler responded to the scene and began tracking the subject. K9 Rudy was alerted to the subject's presence, and the man opened fire, killing K9 Rudy. The couple then fled on foot, and the wanted man was fatally shot when he pointed his firearm at pursuing deputies. K9 Rudy had won a first-place award at the Las Vegas Metro Police K-9 Trials the previous month.

Deputy Sheriff Brett Harris succumbed to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident at the intersection of West Esplanade Avenue and South State Street in San Jacinto at 2:15 am. Deputy Harris was driving west on Esplanade Avenue, responding to a call for service, when his patrol SUV collided with another vehicle traveling north on South State Street. His vehicle was struck on the driver's side, leaving the roadway and hitting a light pole. Another deputy was injured while attempting to free Deputy Harris from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital and kept on life support until his organs could be donated. Deputy Harris was assigned to the Hemet Station. He is survived by his wife, parents, twin sister, and brother.

Sergeant Joshua Clouse was shot and killed by a subject in the 500 block of E 7th Street as he and other officers executed a search warrant. The subject inside of the home was wanted for shooting his wife during a domestic violence incident earlier in the night. The wounded woman could walk to a neighbor's home and call the police. Responding officers secured the subject's residence and obtained a search warrant to take him into custody. As officers with the Cameron Police Department and several neighboring agencies attempted to execute the warrant, the man opened fire, fatally wounding Sergeant Clouse. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject. Sergeant Clouse was a U.S. Army veteran. His wife and two children survive him.

Police Officer Aréanah Preston was shot and killed during an attempted robbery at 8157 South Blackstone Avenue in Chicago at around 1:40 am. She had just finished her shift and was on her way home when armed individuals confronted her, trying to rob her. Despite exchanging shots with multiple suspects, she was fatally injured, and they stole her firearm before fleeing the scene. Officer Preston was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries. The following day, authorities arrested five suspects. Officer Preston had served with the Chicago Police Department for two and a half years and was assigned to the Fifth District. She is survived by her mother, father, and twin sibling.

Detective Jacob Beu suffered fatal injuries in a Sunday crash on Armstrong Valley Road, according to a statement from Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh. Beu was rushed from the scene to Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford, ultimately succumbing to his injuries. He was promoted to patrol corporal in March 2021, then again last year to narcotics detective. He also served on the SWAT team and was awarded for his response during Waverly and Humphreys County floods. Deputy Sheriff Kaitie Leising was shot and killed while investigating a single-vehicle crash involving a drunk driver near Route 128 and County Road G, south of Glenwood City. She had been speaking with the driver for approximately eight minutes and requested that he consent to field sobriety tests. The man suddenly produced a handgun and opened fire on Deputy Leising. Despite being mortally wounded, she returned fire but did not strike the subject. The man ran into nearby woods, committing suicide approximately one hour after other deputies spotted him. Senior Investigator Nick Georgeadis died due to cancer he developed following his assignment to the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site following the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks. Investigator Georgeadis was a United States Army National Guard veteran and had served with the New York State Police for 21 years, assigned to the Special Investigations Unit and New York State Homeland Security. On the afternoon of Thursday, March 2nd, 2023, 33-year-old Sheriff's Deputy Ahssahn Hacker tragically passed away while participating in defensive tactics training at the Southwestern Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Evansville. During the training session, Deputy Hacker suddenly fell ill and was quickly rushed to Deaconess Midtown Hospital by the Evansville Police Department. Despite the valiant lifesaving efforts of the hospital staff, Deputy Hacker never regained consciousness. Deputy Hacker had joined the Sheriff's Office in December of 2022 and was completing his tier-one basic training. He is survived by his wife and three young children. The day after, the coroner's office identified the cause of Deputy Hacker's training death as "exertional sickling" related to sickle cell trait. Sheriff Noah Robinson announced that his office would implement new protocols to identify and protect recruits at risk of developing the condition.

Deputy Sheriff Josh Owen was shot and killed while he and another deputy attempted to arrest a man for domestic violence in the 400 block of Stromen Street in Cyrus at about 7:30 pm.  Deputies as well as police officers from the Glenwood Police Department and Starbuck Police Department had been dispatched to the house for reports of a domestic violence incident. The officers were attempting to place the man into custody when he opened fire on them. Deputy Owen and the subject were both fatally wounded. The other deputy and the Starbuck officer were injured.   Police Officer Garrett Crumby was shot and killed while responding to a shots fired call at the 4600 block of Governors House Drive at 4:45 pm. A female called 911 and reported that she had been shot. When Officer Crumby and another officer responded, they were ambushed by the subject. Both officers were transported to Huntsville Hospital, where Officer Crumby succumbed to his wounds. The other officer remains in critical condition. The subject was taken into custody and charged with capital murder of a law enforcement officer. Officer Crumby had served with the Huntsville Police Department for three years and previously served with the Tuscaloosa Police Department for eight years.   Corporal Scotty Canezaro and Sergeant David Poirrier were killed in a helicopter crash in a field off North Winterville Road, near U.S. 190 at Erwinville, at about 2:26 pm. The crew of the Robinson R-44 helicopter was sent to assist in the pursuit of a fleeing vehicle around 2 am. While in flight, the helicopter's tail rotor struck a tree before crashing into a field. Patrolman Joseph Barlow McAlester Police Department, Oklahoma End of Watch Monday, March 20, 2023 Patrolman Joseph Barlow succumbed to injuries received on March 17th, 2023, when he was struck head-on while escorting a funeral procession for a member of his department who had passed away. The procession was traveling on Highway 75, near 151st Street S in Glenpool, when the pickup truck crossed the center line and struck his patrol car head-on. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries three days later. The truck driver was arrested and charged with causing an accident without carrying a driver’s license, reckless driving, and causing significant bodily injury. Deputy Sheriff Jeremy McCain Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, Oklahoma End of Watch Monday, March 20, 2023 Deputy Sheriff Jeremy McCain succumbed to injuries received when his patrol car struck a gate at the Oklahoma Christian School at 4680 E 2nd Street in Edmund at 6:50 pm. He was leaving the school campus when his patrol vehicle struck a partially opened gate while driving less than 10 miles per hour. The gate crashed through his front windshield and pinned him in the vehicle. He was transported to OU Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries 10 days later.
