Google has developed SynthID, a novel technology designed to embed digital watermarks into AI-generated images and subsequently identify them. This tool aims to enhance transparency around synthetic media, allowing users to better distinguish between content created by AI and authentic imagery, addressing growing concerns about the responsible deployment of AI technologies. SynthID functions by modifying the digital image at the pixel level, creating a watermark imperceptible to the human eye but can be detected by a corresponding AI model. This watermarking process is engineered to be robust, remaining detectable even after common image manipulations such as the application of filters, changes in color, or various compression techniques.
