A new artificial intelligence fiction translation service, GlobeScribe.ai, has launched in the UK, targeting both traditional publishers and self-published authors by offering translations at $100 per book per language. Founders Fred Freeman and Betsy Reavley, who previously established Bloodhound Books, assert that while human expertise will always have a place for complex texts, GlobeScribe.ai democratizes translation, making it accessible for a broader range of fiction. They claim extensive blind testing showed readers could not reliably distinguish between AI and human translations, with some even preferring the AI versions for tone and fidelity.
However, prominent translators and organizations have expressed significant dismay over this initiative. Ian Giles, chair of the Society of Authors Translators Association, argues that GlobeScribe "sidelines the very people who make literature resonate across cultures," dismissing the notion that AI can match the nuanced work of human translators. Award-winning translators like Polly Barton and Deepa Bhasthi emphasize that true literary translation goes beyond literal accuracy, encompassing cultural context, pacing, atmosphere, emotional timbre, and the "whole cultural worlds" embedded in words, which can only be truly conveyed through human understanding.
Despite the founders' belief that AI tools should be "embraced thoughtfully and responsibly" to enhance creativity and productivity for professional translators, concerns persist about the devaluation of labor. Julia Sanches, another translator, fears that such services create an illusion of instant, mediocre translation, potentially lowering the standard for literary arts and doing a "disservice to both authors and readers." This development places translators at the "frontline" of jobs potentially impacted by AI, prompting a broader societal question about the future of human work in creative industries.
