Figure AI – Startup Figure emerged as a serious player in humanoid robots. Unitree’s rapid progress – affordable quadrupeds and now agile humanoids – underscores how globally the race for smart robots is accelerating.
Sanctuary AI – Canada’s Sanctuary AI is focused on general-purpose humanoids for commercial tasks, and 2023–2024 was transformative for them. They introduced Phoenix, a 5’7” humanoid with human-like hands, and proved its mettle in a real retail environment. In a March 2023 pilot, a Sanctuary robot (a torso-on-wheels unit at the time) successfully performed 110 different tasks in a retail store over a week (Sanctuary rolls out Phoenix, a Carbon-based humanoid AI labor robot) – from stocking shelves and tagging items to cleaning and packaging. It hints at an advanced AI platform where the robot watches a human do a task (or is guided via teleoperation) and rapidly generalizes it. Across these platforms, a common theme is AI-driven decision-making. This means robots can move beyond rigid, pre-programmed motions and start handling open-ended instructions and unstructured environments. A robot can be told, “grab the stapler from my desk,” and the latest AI will let it interpret the visual scene, identify a stapler, figure out how to grasp it, and adapt if the stapler isn’t precisely where expected. We’re not at Rosie-the-Maid from The Jetsons yet, but we’re much closer than a year ago.
3. The Rise of Autonomous AI Behavior
Whether in software (AI agents) or hardware (robots), the big leap is autonomous behavior. AI agents and robots in 2025 are increasingly agentic – meaning they can make and execute decisions in a way that looks like genuine autonomy. Let’s break down what that entails:
Multi-Step Reasoning and Planning: Modern AI agents string together complex sequences of actions to reach a goal. For instance, an agent like Auto-GPT might break a task (“research and write a report on renewable energy”) into dozens of smaller steps – finding sources, querying data, drafting text, checking for errors – all on its own. These agents use techniques like chain-of-thought prompting and memory buffers to explain what to do next. One example is the ReAct framework, where the AI alternates between reasoning (thinking steps) and acting (calling tools). By iterating, the agent can handle problems that require multiple logic steps. This is a far cry from older assistants who answered one question at a time with no persistence. Today’s agents maintain context and dynamically adjust their plans as needed. Autonomous Decision-Making: Agents now often operate with minimal human intervention. Emergent Agent Behaviors: One of the most fascinating (and sometimes eerie) aspects of giving AI more autonomy is seeing unexpected, emergent behaviors. Another key aspect of this trend is who is driving it – and it’s a mix of the grassroots open-source community and the tech giants, often in leapfrog fashion. Let’s compare the open-source AI ecosystem with the enterprise solutions coming from companies like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Amazon:

OpenAI itself, beyond just releasing ChatGPT, clearly sees agents as the next step. They allowed ChatGPT to use plugins (like browsing or executing code) in 2023, and then rolled out the more powerful Operator agent in 2024 for web-based tasks (OpenAI debuts Operator, an AI agent with ecommerce applications). OpenAI’s CEO has spoken about developing “super alignment” to eventually manage very autonomous AI eventually, implying the company is preparing for agents that act with much less oversight. OpenAI’s big enterprise play is offering APIs, so that companies can build agents on top of GPT-4 – and many did, from customer support bots to investment research assistants.
Microsoft has arguably been the fastest mover in productizing agents. With its partnership with OpenAI, Microsoft integrated GPT-4 into “Copilot” assistants across Office 365 – e.g. you can ask Copilot in Word to draft a document or Copilot in Teams to summarize a meeting and schedule follow-ups. Under the hood, these Copilots are agents that can take actions like fetching your files, scanning emails for context, etc. Microsoft also added an agent to Windows itself (“Windows Copilot”), aiming to let users automate settings or tasks on their PC with natural language. And don’t forget Bing Chat: it not only answers queries but, via “Actions” can do things like book reservations through OpenTable or compose emails in Outlook – again, an agent executing tasks. Microsoft’s Azure cloud offers Azure OpenAI Service where businesses can deploy GPT-based agents with enterprise controls, and they open-sourced Semantic Kernel to help developers integrate such AI workflows into apps (GitHub - kaushikb11/awesome-llm-agents: A curated list of awesome LLM agents frameworks.). In sum, Microsoft is weaving agent capabilities into the software many people use daily, but in a carefully UX-designed manner.
Google, not to be outdone, has integrated its LLMs into many products with a focus on agents. Google’s Bard, its competitor to ChatGPT, now has the ability to connect to your Google apps. For instance, it can read your Gmail (with permission) to find information or interact with Google Docs and Sheets. This essentially turns Bard into an agent that can act on your behalf within the Google ecosystem, enabling tasks such as, “Draft a response to this email, schedule a meeting, and summarize the attached document.” Google also introduced “Duet AI” in Google Workspace, which, similar to Copilot, assists users in writing, organizing, and automating tasks in documents, spreadsheets, and more. Another example is the integration of Google Assistant with Bard; the company hinted that this upgrade would enhance Assistant’s capabilities by incorporating LLM reasoning powers. Imagine telling your phone, “Hey Google, book me a haircut next Friday and email me the confirmation,” and it managing the entire process seamlessly. On the cloud front, Google’s Vertex AI is integrating agents as a service, allowing developers to create workflow-driven agents that can utilize various Google APIs – for example, an agent that monitors and adjusts your cloud resources. Thus, Google’s strategy is to embed helpful AI agents everywhere, often operating behind the scenes of familiar products. Furthermore, Google DeepMind’s research, which we will cover next, contributes to these capabilities, such as Gemini’s “agentic” design (Year in review: Google's biggest AI advancements of 2024).
Amazon also plays a significant role: they announced a new generative AI upgrade for Alexa, the popular voice assistant, in September 2023. This upgrade allows Alexa to handle more complex, open-ended requests by leveraging a custom large language model. It effectively transforms Alexa from a scripted assistant into something more agent-like, capable of chaining intents or holding conversations to clarify your goals. Additionally, Amazon’s AWS provides Bedrock and CodeWhisperer, which can be utilized to build agents; for instance, CodeWhisperer could be part of a coding agent pipeline. We might soon witness Alexa not only controlling IoT devices with pre-set commands but also managing arbitrary tasks, such as, “find my kid’s soccer schedule and set an alarm if it’s a game day,” thus exhibiting agent-like behavior.
Many companies are piloting AI co-workers or copilots in enterprise settings. For example, banks have AI assistants to help employees retrieve information, McKinsey developed a consulting analyst AI to automate slide creation, and hospitals use AI agents to summarize patient visits for doctors. While these may not be sci-fi robots roaming around, they are agents making decisions within their scope to save humans time.
An important point is that open-source and enterprise efforts often complement each other. Open-source prototypes validate ideas that enterprises refine for reliability, and vice versa: a large company may release a research paper, followed by open implementations. We observed this with “ReAct” agents (Reason+Act, proposed by researchers from Princeton and Google), which were quickly adopted into frameworks. When OpenAI released the function calling API, LangChain and others immediately integrated it, allowing community-built agents to utilize it as well. There exists a healthy exchange but also a philosophical difference: open source pushes boundaries and emphasizes innovation and customization, while enterprises prioritize safety, integration, and user experience.
The great news for developers and tech enthusiasts is that open-source frameworks are unlocking incredible creativity. You no longer need a PhD in AI to experiment with an autonomous agent – communities have shared templates and best practices. Suppose you want to build a personal scheduler bot that coordinates your home devices. In that case, you can grab something like an open-source “OpenAgent” toolkit (GitHub - kaushikb11/awesome-llm-agents: A curated list of awesome LLM agents frameworks.) and start coding. This bottom-up development means the long tail of use cases will get addressed. Meanwhile, average consumers might first experience these agents through polished products by the big players (like an AI mode in Gmail that just does what you need). We’re seeing the beginning of an AI agent “app store” ecosystem, where third-party developers create agents or skills that others can use – similar to how smartphone apps took off.
5. Google’s AI & Robotics Contributions
It’s worth spotlighting Google’s role in this “Year of the Agent,” because Google (and its Alphabet affiliates) have been heavily investing in both the software and hardware sides of autonomous AI – often quietly via research that later surfaces in products.
On the AI agent framework side, Google’s DeepMind and Research teams have pioneered ideas that are now fundamental to agentic AI. For instance, Google researchers influenced the whole concept of combining reasoning and tool use in an LLM (the ReAct framework). Google also developed Prompt-based learning techniques, memory architectures, and multi-step reasoning enhancements that trickled into open implementations. At Google I/O and in papers, they have hinted at “internal agents” they use, like an AI that can debug code by systematically querying itself (a technique called Tree-of-Thoughts, which Google researchers explored).

In fact, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai and DeepMind’s CEO Demis Hassabis described Gemini as being built “for the agentic era” (Year in review: Google's biggest AI advancements of 2024). Gemini 2.0 (with variants like “Flash”) is designed not just to chat, but to plan and take actions, including coding. Google integrated Gemini into things like Search (the “AI overviews” in Search that can answer complex queries) (Year in review: Google's biggest AI advancements of 2024) and they’re testing it in products. Moreover, Google showcased experimental agent prototypes alongside Gemini: an updated Project Astra (a codename for a “universal AI agent” project) (Year in review: Google's biggest AI advancements of 2024), and a code-generating agent. Project Astra has been described as an effort to create an AI that can help with everyday life – essentially a general assistant that can do a wide variety of tasks across domains (RT-2: New model translates vision and language into action - Google DeepMind). While details are sparse, the fact it’s highlighted means Google is actively working on the holy grail of a do-anything AI helper (aligned with their mission of organizing the world’s information and making it useful). Google Research also published work on adaptive agents that can learn behaviors over time and across contexts, trying to imbue more persistence and personalization into AI assistants.
Regarding robotics, Google (now via Google DeepMind for a lot of it) has contributed significantly. We have already discussed RT-2, which is a landmark in combining LLM-style knowledge with robot control (RT-2: New model translates vision and language into action - Google DeepMind). Before that, Google’s Everyday Robots unit (since absorbed into DeepMind) and Robotics at Google had developed PaLM-E, an embodied version of their PaLM language model that could take in visual observations and output high-level action instructions. They also demonstrated SayCan, where a robot was guided by an LLM (providing feasible step-by-step plans) combined with a low-level motion model – a concept that clearly informed later work. In 2024, Google DeepMind’s blog noted they are working on “AutoRT”, an approach that combines a large language or vision model with a low-level robotic controller (RT-1 or RT-2) to create more general robotic behavior (Shaping the future of advanced robotics - Google DeepMind). They often present it in terms of helpfulness: e.g. “universal AI agent that is helpful in everyday life” (RT-2: New model translates vision and language into action - Google DeepMind). With billions of users in their software ecosystem, if Google succeeds even partially, their AI agents (software or embodied) could touch a huge portion of the population.
It’s also worth noting Google’s emphasis on safety and alignment in agents. DeepMind has an entire team looking at “Scalable Alignment” – how to ensure very autonomous agents follow human intent and ethical guidelines. They’ve proposed ideas like an Agent benchmark to test behaviors and techniques to restrict an agent’s autonomy if needed. This is crucial because as agents get more capable, you want to trust them not to go awry (even if just by mistake, like ordering 100 cartons of milk because you said, “We need milk”).
In summary, Google is providing much of the brainpower – research, algorithms, and even philosophical framing (e.g. “built for the agentic era” (Year in review: Google's biggest AI advancements of 2024)) – that’s shaping the AI agent landscape. And through its products, it might provide the most common face of these agents that regular people see, whether it’s an Assistant that actually completes tasks or a robot that can tidy up the kitchen.
6. The 'Skynet Effect' – Implications for the Future
With AI agents becoming more autonomous and robots becoming more capable, it’s hard to resist asking: Are we headed toward a Skynet-like future? The term “Skynet effect” is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the self-aware AI from the Terminator movies. In reality, what we’re seeing is not sci-fi sentience, but a new paradigm in automation and AI integration that will impact society in significant ways.
A New Paradigm in Automation: Traditionally, automation meant machines following set routines – an assembly line robot repeats the same weld repeatedly, or software executes a fixed workflow. Now, we have adaptive automation and decision-making. AI agents can handle variations and exceptions by themselves. This could dramatically expand what gets automated. We may soon have AI agents automating white-collar workflows: sorting through thousands of emails, completing paperwork, doing basic legal discovery, and writing first drafts of reports – tasks considered too nuanced to fully hand over to machines. Likewise in physical tasks, robots with AI can step out of highly controlled factory zones into more dynamic settings like warehouses, hospitals, or even streets (delivery bots), because they can make judgments on the fly (e.g., navigate around an unexpected obstacle or prioritize one delivery over another due to traffic). This flexible automation means many jobs will change. Rather than replacing humans outright, many agents will serve as force multipliers – one human overseeing a fleet of AI helpers. For example, a single customer support agent might supervise 10 AI chatbots that handle routine inquiries, only stepping in for the trickiest cases. A home contractor might rent a humanoid robot that can show you how to install drywall, and then it does most of the labor while the contractor focuses on fine details.

On your computer, an AI agent might become like a personal secretary: it schedules appointments by coordinating emails and auto-filling forms for you, and it learns your preferences to the point it can handle reordering household supplies when you’re low. In entertainment, game worlds will feel more immersive as NPCs are powered by agents that carry on meaningful conversations or evolve over time. In education, each student might have an AI tutor that can actively help them – not just answer questions but set up a study schedule, find practice problems, and even nudge the student to focus (maybe even by controlling a tablet to lock out distractions during study hour!).
Home Robots and Beyond: On the robotics front, we could within a few years see the first generation of consumer-friendly autonomous robots. Tesla’s Optimus is one vision: a general-purpose humanoid that could do basic chores or assist the elderly. Initially, these might appear in workplaces (factories, warehouses, retail) as extra sets of hands. Other formats include robotic pets (advanced AI-driven dog robots that truly respond to your behavior and patrol your home), drone assistants (camera drones that can do security sweeps or help with outdoor chores), and specialized bots (an AI kitchen assistant that chops vegetables perfectly while you handle the actual cooking). Everyday users might first experience robots in public spaces – e.g., mall security robots, hotel lobby concierge robots, or autonomous delivery rovers on sidewalks. AI will make these machines more polite, helpful, and safe than their earlier dumb automation versions. They’ll be able to respond to natural language (“Where is the restroom?” – and the robot points a arm or screen to guide you).
All this autonomy does raise the question: Are we in control? It’s crucial to note that current AI agents, while autonomous in execution, are not independent actors with their own agendas. There will likely be an increase in demand for “prompt engineers,” “AI trainers,” and robot technicians.
Additionally, new consumer services may arise—such as personal AI consultants, AI-enhanced therapy bots, and more. The economics of automation might also change. Previously, automation required significant capital investments. Now, an AI agent can be implemented with just some cloud computing, making automation accessible even to small businesses (a mom-and-pop shop could affordably use a customer service AI agent, whereas they would never have been able to deploy a call center) overseas).
Safety and Alignment: The more autonomy we give to AI, the more we have to trust it and ensure it behaves. This is why there is a heavy focus on alignment (making AI’s goals match human values and instructions). In practical daily terms, it means ensuring your AI assistant respects privacy (e.g., an agent managing your emails doesn’t leak info to the wrong place) and security (an agent with access to your finances can’t be tricked by a hacker into sending money). Companies will likely introduce guardrails requiring confirmation for high-stakes actions (“Are you sure you want the AI to execute this bank transfer?”). Users will also learn to set boundaries (“never purchase an item above $100 without asking me”). It’s a learning curve akin to how we learned to use smartphones wisely (like disabling in-app purchases for kids). That indicates how pervasive this could become – millions of robots, physical and digital, working alongside humans.
Will it be utopia or dystopia? Likely neither – just different. There is a chance for a lot of good: AI agents could handle drudgery and dangerous jobs, leading to safer and more enjoyable human work. Elderly or disabled individuals could gain more independence with the help of robot assistants. Knowledge and expertise could be amplified – a doctor with an AI agent that reads every medical journal can offer super-informed care. Education could be tailored by AI tutors to each child’s needs, potentially leveling the playing field.
However, there are concerns: ethical use, privacy, and dependency. We must ensure AI agents respect human dignity (for example, a customer shouldn’t feel dehumanized when interacting with bots). Additionally, humans will need to maintain their skills and critical thinking—nobody wants to forget how to cook, drive, or write just because AI can do it all for them. There’s also a psychological aspect to interacting with increasingly human-like agents. As they become more personable (such as Meta’s assistants, who are even given personas like celebrity-style chatbots), we may form bonds with them. This could be beneficial (offering companionship to lonely individuals) or problematic (if people start to trust AI more than humans or if AI manipulates emotions in advertising contexts, for instance).
The term “Skynet effect” can also suggest a cascade of capabilities—once a certain threshold is reached, things can accelerate rapidly, spiraling beyond control. We should remain mindful but not adopt a fatalistic attitude. Unlike the fictional Skynet, our AIs are created by multiple stakeholders who actively monitor their development. Even as they learn to perform more tasks, they are constrained by the objectives we establish. Additionally, there’s a collective effort in the AI community focused on AI safety to prevent any scenario where AI acts contrary to human interests.
In conclusion, 2025, the Year of the Agent, signals the dawn of a new era: one where autonomous AI agents and robots integrate into the fabric of daily life. It’s an era filled with promise—where mundane tasks can be offloaded, assistance is always available, and humanity can potentially accomplish more with the help of our tireless digital and mechanical companions. However, wise guidance is also required to ensure these agents genuinely serve us rather than vice versa. One thing is sure: the world will look markedly different by the end of this decade as if the boundaries between science fiction and reality have blurred. We’re not at Skynet, but we are at a pivotal moment—and it’s incredibly exciting to be part of it.
